Master Data Management Architecture

An MDM infrastructure provides a repository that contains metadata about enterprise information and common policies, processes, and workflows for maintaining the information.

The repository is by default the master for information that's not managed by other enterprise systems and may be deployed as either a virtual or physical system of record responsible for synchronizing information across enterprise applications.

MDM encompasses comprehensive structured and unstructured master information (about products, customers, vendors, and so forth), data warehouse information, and content repositories.
MDM is as much about business strategy as it is about software.

MDM spans software, business process, information stewardship, company governance, and business transformation. Although an MDM service layer makes it possible to manage master information in a holistic, comprehensive way, enterprises undertaking an MDM strategy also need to focus on the business processes that create and update master data, as well as company policies that are reflected in these business processes.
